On the evening of the 15th of December, car drivers lined up for the 'night of the four tunnel tubes'. The tubes of the first double-layered tunnel in The Nederlands were put into operation. A phone call from Minister Schultz van Haegen (Infrastructure and Environment) to the traffic control centre served as the official ribbon cutting moment. The 2,3 kilometer tunnel is part of a 6 kilometer long system to release the pressure of traffic on the city of Maastricht. After this milestone, West 8's design for the landscape intervention on top of these tunnels and nearby surrounding areas will be executed.
