The Architect’s Newspaper (AN) awarded Governors Island Park and Public Space honorable mention for the 2016 Best of Design Awards in the Public Landscape Category. This award was announced on December 19, 2016. AN commended how the “extraordinary 360-degree panoramic experience of the New York Harbor, the sculpted topography, winding pathways, and carefully planted trees of Governors Island Park create a beautifully choreographed celebration of nature while improving resilience for rising sea levels.”

AN began the Best of Design Awards with six categories in 2013. By 2016, four cycles later, the categories have increased to twenty-seven. They span landscape, architecture, and interiors, and consider professional and student work, fixtures and furnishings, completed and un-built projects. The winners are published on AN’s website and on all of their social media accounts which boast over 1 million viewers. AN strives to use this platform to recognize innovative work in its respective field. This year they were also published in the first ever stand-alone print edition. Winners are chosen by a carefully selected panel of judges from the design community. This year the panel consisted of  Erik Verboon, Claire Weisz, Karen Stonely, Christopher Leong, Adrianne Weremchuk, and Matt Shaw.

The 2016 Public Landscape Category winner was GGN’s Lower Rainier Vista Project. Honorable mention was also awarded to Newark Riverfront Park. To read the full article about the Best of Design Awards Public Landscape Category, click here.
