Governors Island awarded with the award for Excellence in Design 2012
The 24th of July, a ceremony will take place for Thirtieth Annual Awards for Excellence in Design by the New York Design Commission for Governors Island. West 8 is one of the recipients for the award for 'the construction of Governors Island Park and Public Spaces, Phase I, including the installation of Day is done by Susan Philipsz'.
Last May, the Mayor Bloomberg announced the official groundbreaking of Phase I of the Masterplan as developed by West 8. Areas currently under construction are Liggett Terrace, Hammock Grove, the Play Lawns, Soissons Landing and historic areas on the North Island such as the Parade Ground and South Battery. The park design fully celebrates the ecology, history, culture, and the magnificent beauty of the New York harbor, connecting New York's City to its waterfront. Future phases include the Wetland Gardens, Hills, and a Great Promenade.
Established in 1892, the Design Commission, formerly known as the Art Commission, takes up an important role in New York’s society. Their mission is to review permanent works of art, architecture and landscape architecture taking place at City-owned properties. It also serves as archivist and curator of the City’s public art collection and documentation. Since 1982 they established the Award for Excellence in Design to celebrate key projects in New York. Selected from hundreds of submission, the awarded projects exemplify the highest standards in design.
